Dictionaries are powerful teaching tools in the hands of adults who are learning how to read; that is why the Literacy Council of Prince George's County is asking you to help us "raise" 125 dictionaries for our programs by the end of the year.  We launched our first Dictionary Drive on October 16, 2011  -- the birthday of Noah Webster, whom many consider the Father of the American Dictionary -- and are a little more than half way there with dictionary donations, pledges, and monetary gifts just two weeks later (November 1, 2011)!

Please help us reach our goal by the end of the year.

Whether you're purchasing a new dictionary or passing-down your own,
dictionary donations can be delivered or dropped off to:

If you would like to make a donation instead, please visit www.literacycouncil.org/give.

The Details of the Dictionary Drive

We are aiming to raise 45 Webster New Basic Dictionaries to establish two classroom sets for our Adult Basic Education Classrooms and resources for our one-on-one tutors.

This Webster dictionary is uniquely designed to help beginning readers.  It defines  49,000 words that adult readers are most likely to encounter in newspapers and magazines, on job applications and product instructions, on advertising billboards and their children's school progress reports. The dictionary defines these words in clear, easy-to-understand language, using only words that are themselves defined in the dictionary, but never condescending to the adult reader.

Webster's New Basic Dictionary is available at Barnes & Noble and other retailers for $7.50.

We need to raise 80 Longman Study Dictionaries of American English to establish four sets to be used at our English Language Centers.

The Longman Study Dictionary of American English is an invaluable resource for low-intermediate learners. The dictionary accelerates vocabulary development by highlighting academic vocabulary and content-area vocabulary across subject areas.

The Longman Study Dictionary of American English is available at Barnes & Noble for $23.47 and other retailers.
