GIVE.   TUTOR.   VOLUNTEER.

One in four adults in Prince George's County hide the fact that they struggle to read. They sign permission slips that they don’t understand, carry newspapers they can’t decipher, and memorize routes so they don’t have to read maps.

The Literacy Council of Prince George’s County helps these adults find the support they need – with more than 40 classes and programs in basic reading, high school diploma preparation, English language, and family literacy. Now, let’s find you a role:

GED Site Assistants

Help our GED instructors stay focused on delivering the curriculum by helping students get checked in and directing them to their assigned classes.

What you should expect:
To act as first point of contact for students reporting for class.
Two nights/week; one hour/night.
4 month commitment.

Contact Jill Hall at jhall@literacycouncil.org or 301.699.9770 for more information.

Teaching Assistants

Additional support is needed within our ESL and GED Preparation classes. Since our classes have students learning at many different education levels, assistants are perfect to work with some students who might not be at a level that’s not comparable to the majority of the class.

What you should expect:
To offer small group support to students needing more help in English, reading, writing or math.
Locations around P.G. County and hours between 6:30 and 9:00pm (also available; Saturday between 9:00am and 2:00pm).
4 month commitment.

Volunteer Tutors

Help bring the joy of reading to Prince George’s County adults! Tutors  offer positive encouragement and provide one-on-one reinforcement to an adult who is struggling to improve comprehension of written materials, write letters, strengthen basic math skills, or address advanced challenging materials needed to advance in studies or for work.

What you should expect:
To complete a 17.5 hour tutor-training series before being matched with a learner
To meet with your learner 2 - 4 hours a week
6 month commitment requested.
