Please note that tutors will travel from the Largo site to our Hyattsville office during the last session. Classes The Literacy Council provides classes at over 20 locations throughout Prince George’s County. These classes are taught by paid professionally trained teachers in the following areas: basic reading, six levels of ESOL from Beginning through Advanced, PreGED, and GED preparation.
Teaching Jobs
Although the Literacy Council is not currently

time.
Teachers are hired based on their mastery of
subject matter being taught, their reliability,
and on their ability to provide a respectful
learning environment, determine and address
individual students goals and needs, motivate
adults to do the work required to meet their
goals, and maintain and report needed

External Diploma Program (EDP) The External Diploma program is provided by the Literacy Council of Prince George’s County at the Sports and Learning Complex in Landover near FedEx Field. This is an alternative way to obtain a Maryland State High School Diploma without having to take the GED examination. This program consists of self-study assignments and life-skills assessments in place of classroom lessons and examinations. Students meet with their Advisors/Assessors every week and each day get one step closer to a high school diploma. Students in this program are highly motivated and determined to do whatever it takes to obtain a high school diploma and a brighter future. Computer Lab Instruction A computer lab is available to enable students to use computers to work on their literacy skills with the assistance from a teacher in the laboratory.
English Conversation Groups English conversation groups allow students to learn about U.S. culture and government while building Englsih speaking, reading and writing skills.
